A few notes about our subjects this year.....

RELIGION

Many of you will be receiving sacraments-Please make sure children are signed up and registered for their sacraments with their parish! It's never too early! Many parishes celebrate Reconciliation for the first time with 2nd grade in December, while others do it later in the spring. Please check with your parish. Holy Communion will also be celebrated with your parish later in the spring.

St. Mary Academy WILL have a celebration with all sacrament students in the spring, but the students receive their sacraments from their parish church.

Get ready for MATH!

Now that you're in second grade we will review relationships between numbers and recognize mathematical patterns. As second graders you'll become adept at one and two-digit addition and subtraction and learn a variety of methods for solving mathematical problems. We will learn and compare money values, time, analyze and interpret data on charts and investigate characteristics of two and three dimensional shapes, among other things!

LANGUAGE ARTS

Second graders will gain more skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They will continue to build an understanding of the connection between sounds, letters, and words. They will gain skills in using word roots to help them figure out the meaning of new words. Second graders practice word use and comprehension by writing to express ideas and information.

Foundational skills for second grade readers involve making sure they are able to read carefully and independently for sustained periods of time. They will grow in their ability to comprehend unfamiliar text and to make predictions based on what they have just read.

In second grade, students continue learning how to communicate clearly and coherently with their writing.

Second grade students will grammatically correct sentences and paragraphs. They will continue to review the grammar rules they have learned to this point, and will add new concepts such as; distinguishing between complete and incomplete sentences, identifying and correctly using parts of speech including nouns and verbs, adjectives and using quotation marks correctly.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Second graders explore the lives of people who make a difference in their everyday lives and learn the stories of extraordinary people from history whose achievements have touched them, directly or indirectly. They uncover what a community is and how to be a part of it. Students study people who supply goods and services and gain an understanding of the complex interdependence in our freemarket system.  Second graders will be acquiring an understanding of what humans must have to survive (needs vs wants), their place in the world (basic geography skills), their national identity (American holidays, landmarks, and symbols), their community (what makes a community and the jobs that keep it operating).

SCIENCE

Second graders will acquire a broad range of skills for understanding the natural world around them. This year, students will start making detailed observations, drawing conclusions from data, and even learn how to make use of the information they gather.  In physical science we will explore states of matter, magnetism and motion and force. In earth science second graders will explore the composition of the Earth, changing landforms, weather and space. In life science,  we will learn about plants and animals and their habitats and life cycles.

See you soon!

Have a great Summer 2nd---Ooops!...I mean, now 3rd graders!

Below are just a few more memories of this past year...

THANK YOU parents, for your VERY GENEROUS GIFT, and for all your support this year.

WE did it!

WE ARE THE KNIGHTS!

NOTE TO STUDENTS: (knee-mail) Over the summer, please take time to pray each day. While we pray together as a school community each morning, we pray often as a class and in different ways.  Every single day since you have been in my classroom, before you have snack in the morning and you say your little prayer, I ask you to put your heads down on your desks. I say to you, “take a moment to thank God you are healthy enough to be here today. Ask God to send comfort to someone who you think might need it.” If it is raining I usually say something like, “thank God for days when He gives the Earth a drink.” (yes, I hear your quiet giggles and that’s okay, God doesn’t mind quiet giggles) I tell you to thank God for your snack and to be mindful of the children in the world who might not even get clean water that day. Then we are quiet for a few moments and I want you to know I watch you. I see how reverent you are, and how much you mean it when you pray quietly by yourself. Don’t stop that when you are home. Keep praying. Yes, say the all the prayers we have learned, but also take the time to talk to God by yourself. He is listening.

                                                                                                        You did it!

You made it through 2nd grade and are ready for 3rd grade.

I am SO PROUD of the EFFORT you put into your schoolwork-even when you were at home!

                                                                                               YOU ALL ROCK!

See you at our End of Year ZOOM party! ?

Grade 2

Context:

Second Graders have excelled in Keyboarding and have been working with online games such as TypingTest.com and Popcorn Typer.com.
Students know and can recite all rows of the keyboard.
Being away from this practice may slow their progress, so plan is to utilize other fun, easy games that will help maintain these skills.

With 2 weeks remaining in the school year, this is the most advantageous to these students at this time.

Assignment:

Students can choose between any of the games listed below to continue to practice their keyboard skills.

https://www.roomrecess.com/mobile/WPM/play.html
or
https://www.roomrecess.com/mobile/CaveboyKeyboarding/play.html
or
https://www.typingtest.com/

 Religion

Sunday was Pentecost-also known as “the birthday of the church.”

Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter, and 10 days after Ascension Thursday when the Apostles received the gift of the Holy Spirit-as promised by Jesus.

Yesterday, you watched a few video clips and completed an activity. Today, you are going to show what you learned by completing the pages that were emailed.

Do you remember what the symbol of the Holy Spirit is? We talked a lot about this in class. You might need to remember that for this activity.

Social Studies

For Social Studies today, I want you to draw a COMPASS ROSE. Not a plain, boring compass rose-I want to see a really cool compass rose! Look on the internet. Make sure you use N, E, S, W and NE, SE, SW and SE. Make sure you place those in the correct places. In fact—bring them to tomorrow’s ZOOM—I want to SEE them!!  ? Make sure they are COLORED in!
